Asbestos is a dangerous fibrous material, a designated substance and regulated by the federal government. It was commonly used to insulate residential, commercial and industrial buildings during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. In Canadian construction, asbestos is no longer used and it is regulated and removed from old buildings whenever and wherever possible. If you have an older home or office building then it is important that you have an inspection with asbestos testing conducted. Now is the time for a zero tolerance approach for asbestos.

Why do Asbestos testing?

Asbestos fibers have been directly connected to cancers of the lung and other respiratory illnesses including mesothelioma. The lightweight fibers in asbestos are often small enough to be invisible to the naked eye and can enter the lungs when disturbed. Demolition, construction, renovation and even improper attempts to remove asbestos can release fibers into the air where they pose the greatest health risk. If uncertain whether a workplace, residence, commercial building or other infrastructure has asbestos-containing materials, asbestos testing and a building assessment should be conducted and a management plan should be implemented immediately.

Asbestos is a major threat to our health. The tiny fibers can cause irreparable damage to the lungs and conditions directly related to prolonged exposure to asbestos include:

  • Lung cancer
  • Mesothelioma (cancer of the chest and abdominal lining)
  • Irreversible scarring of the lungs (also known as asbestosis)

Asbestos can be hard to identify, it is often mixed with other building materials and “Asbestos Containing Materials” need to be investigated by an experienced asbestos testing professional.
